1. Dictyssa Melichar, 1906 taxonomy

Dictyssa Melichar, 1906 is currently considered as a valid taxon of genus rank in the family Tropiduchidae Stål, 1866 of the Fulgoromorpha. This genus was first described by Melichar L. in 1906 in the following paper: Monographie der Issiden. (Homoptera). Abhandlungen der K. K. Zoologisch-botanischen Gesellschaft in Wien. Wien, 3: 1-327.

It is currently classified in order Hemiptera Linné, 1758, suborder Fulgoromorpha Evans, 1946, superfamily Fulgoroidea Latreille, 1807, family Tropiduchidae Stål, 1866, subfamily Elicinae Melichar, 1915, tribe Elicini Melichar, 1915.

Currently 16 species have been described in Dictyssa, as summarized in Table 1.

The type species of the genus is Dictyssa areolata Melichar, 1906.

Dictyssa is an extant taxon.

2. Dictyssa Melichar, 1906 geographical distribution and bioregions

According to the geographical TDWG standard (2001), Dictyssa Melichar, 1906 are known from the Nearctic biogeographical region as defined by Wallace (1876). More precisely, they are distributed in the Mexican and North American zoogeographic regions as defined by Holt (2013). Figures 1 and 2 display dynamic graphs showcasing the longitudinal and latitudinal profiles of Dictyssa Melichar, 1906 arround the across the globe according to their species richness. A scroll on the histogram bars displays the species richness of the corresponding regions.

3. Dictyssa Melichar, 1906 biological interactions

As all planthoppers, Dictyssa Melichar, 1906 are obligatory phytophagous terrestrial insects; they mainly feed on host plants belonging to the order: Rosales (Rhamnaceae, Rosaceae).
Figure 3a depicts the orders of plants on which Dictyssa Melichar, 1906 feeds, and figure 3b the percentage they represent in the diet for the entire genus. Figures 4a and 4b do the same more precisely for the family level of these plants.
